To develop fundamental dinking consistency and control by practicing dinking back and forth with a partner, focusing on keeping the ball low and maintaining a steady rhythm.
Equipment
- Pickleball paddles
- Pickleballs
- Pickleball court
How to run it
Partners position themselves at their respective non-volley zone lines. They dink the ball back and forth, concentrating on keeping it low over the net and landing softly within the opponent's kitchen area. Begin close to the net, gradually increasing the distance as comfort and skill improve, while focusing on maintaining a steady rhythm.
Coach Dave’s cues
Emphasize soft hands and a relaxed grip. The paddle should remain in front of the body, with a slight upward angle to lift the ball. Maintain bent knees and good balance, aiming for a gentle arc that results in a minimal bounce. Focus on "hitting through two balls" (visualizing a second ball behind the actual one to encourage longer contact and better control).
Watch for
Hitting the ball with excessive force, causing it to pop up. Employing a large swing instead of a controlled push or lift motion. Chopping at the ball or using excessive wrist action. Having stagnant feet and not stepping into the shot.
