To sharpen hand-eye coordination and dramatically improve reaction time for the rapid exchanges, commonly known as "hands battles," that occur at the net, with a specific focus on directing the ball downwards.
Equipment
- Pickleball paddles
- Pickleballs (basket recommended)
- Pickleball court
How to run it
Players position themselves at their respective kitchen lines. The drill commences with collaborative, controlled hits aimed at each other’s chest area. This progresses to more challenging shots directed downwards. One player initiates an attack (a speed-up). The objective is to sustain the rapid exchange, with each player attempting to hit the ball downwards to force an error or elicit a pop-up from the opponent. Shots should be executed at approximately 70% intensity, with the clear intent of getting the ball down.
Coach Dave’s cues
The primary focus should be on getting the ball to dip downwards at the opponent, rather than merely keeping it in play. Practice hitting down on the ball to compel defensive shots from the opponent. Utilize multiple balls (a basket is ideal) to ensure continuous practice without frequent interruptions for ball retrieval. Maintain an upright paddle position and use short, compact swings.
Watch for
Allowing the "brain to shut off" and merely reacting without strategic intent, rather than actively trying to control the exchange. Hitting the ball too hard, leading to a loss of control and errors. Failing to actively try to make the ball dip at the opponent's feet or lower body.
