To practice hitting consistent and accurate third shot drops using a ball machine to simulate deep returns, focusing on placing the drop into a target area near the non-volley zone line.
Equipment
- Pickleball paddle
- Pickleballs
- Pickleball court
- Ball machine
- Targets (e.g., cones, towels, hula hoop)
How to run it
Set the ball machine along the baseline to deliver a ball deep into the court, simulating a return of serve. The player waits at their baseline to hit a third shot drop. Place two targets slightly overlapping the kitchen line on the machine's side, as if aiming toward an opponent's backhand. Focus on hitting a soft drop that lands in the target area, making the shot unattackable. Practice with purpose, aiming for the targets consistently.
Coach Dave’s cues
A good third shot drop neutralizes the opponent's advantage at the NVZ, giving the player time to transition to the net. Aim for the shot to land at the opponent's feet if possible. Focus on footwork to get into a balanced position for the drop. Let the ball drop to an optimal height before contact.
Watch for
Hitting the drop too high, making it attackable. Hitting the drop too short into the net. Not getting enough arc on the ball. Rushing the shot or using too much arm instead of a softer, controlled motion.
