To simulate real game scenarios by having players alternate between offensive and defensive positions, working on smooth transitions between attacking shots (drives, smashes) and defensive maneuvers (blocks, lobs, resets).

How to run it
Players start a point, with one player designated to initiate an attack (e.g., a drive or speed-up from a dink). The other player focuses on defending the attack (e.g., blocking, resetting, lobbing). Players then play out the point, focusing on transitioning between offensive and defensive roles as the rally dictates. After the point, roles can be switched or determined by who won the previous point.
Coach Dave’s cues
Focus on recognizing opportunities to attack and knowing when to play defensively. Work on quick recovery and repositioning after hitting a shot. Communicate with your partner if playing doubles variation.
Watch for
Over-attacking from poor positions. Failing to reset the point when under pressure. Poor shot selection leading to unforced errors. Slow transitions between offense and defense.
