Setup

Start in normal doubles positions. The serving team stays behind the baseline for the return; the returning team advances after the bounce.

How to run it

1. The server selects a purposeful, high-margin target.
2. The receiver returns deep and advances under control with the partner.
3. The serving team chooses a drop or drive based on the return and opponent positions.
4. Play the point live.
5. After the rally, the serving team names the third-shot choice and whether the next movement matched its quality. Rotate server normally.

Coach Dave’s cues

Use the first two shots to create position. Split when opponents contact. A low third ball may earn an advance; a neutral or high ball may require holding or defending.

Watch for

Serving without a target, returning short while rushing forward, moving through opponent contact, or charging after every third shot regardless of quality.
