To master the third shot drop through high-volume repetition, focusing on controlled drops from the baseline into the opponent's kitchen, thereby facilitating the hitting team's approach to the net.
Equipment
- Pickleball paddles
- Pickleballs
- Pickleball court
How to run it
One player (the Feeder) positions themselves at the kitchen line. The other player (the Dropper) is at the baseline. The Feeder provides consistent feeds to the Dropper, who practices executing controlled third shot drops that land in the Feeder's kitchen area. The primary focus is on repetition. It is beneficial to practice hitting drop shots from various positions on the baseline—straight ahead, crosscourt from the left, crosscourt from the right, and from the middle.
Coach Dave’s cues
The primary aim for the drop shots should be to land softly within the kitchen, compelling the opponent to hit an upward, less aggressive return. Allow the ball to descend and decelerate sufficiently before making contact. Engage the legs and ensure the follow-through is directed towards the target. Visualize realistic game scenarios by varying player positioning to simulate actual match play.
Watch for
Hitting the ball too high or too deep, rendering it attackable. Rushing the execution of the shot. Not allowing the ball to drop to an optimal height before contact. Using excessive wrist movement or an overly large backswing, which compromises control.
