Maintain useful partner spacing and protect likely angles by shifting as a connected pair.
Equipment
- Pickleball paddles
- Pickleballs
- Pickleball court
- Optional rope or two cones to visualize spacing
Setup
Two players begin side by side in a standard doubles formation. A feeder or coach stands opposite and points or carries a ball to different court locations; no hitting is required at first.
How to run it
1. The feeder shows a ball location: left, middle, right, short, or deep.
2. Partners shift together while preserving practical spacing.
3. Freeze and inspect the line, middle, and crosscourt openings.
4. Repeat 10 random cues, then add shadow volleys and recoveries.
5. Progress to gentle feeds while the pair calls the ball and recovers together.
Coach Dave’s cues
Imagine a flexible rope connecting the partners. The player nearest the line protects it; the partner shades the middle. Adjust spacing to the ball instead of standing on fixed spots.
Watch for
Both players chasing the same area, leaving the middle open, moving as isolated players, crossing paths, or using a real rope where it could create a trip hazard.
