Time the split step to an opponent cue, move in any direction, and regain balance before the next action.
Equipment
- 2–4 cones or safe floor markers
- Pickleball paddle
Setup
Create a small movement box with a center marker. One player begins in ready position at center while a partner stands safely in front as the caller.
How to run it
1. The caller points left, right, forward, or backward.
2. The mover makes a small split step as the cue is given, then travels under control in that direction.
3. The mover establishes balance at the outside marker and returns to center in ready position.
4. Complete 8 random cues, then switch roles.
5. Progress by adding a shadow forehand or backhand after the move, then a gentle hand-fed ball.
Coach Dave’s cues
React after the cue rather than guessing. Keep the split step small. Use short adjustment steps near the destination. Arrive balanced enough to change direction again.
Watch for
Jumping too high, crossing the feet during lateral movement, leaning beyond the base of support, or adding speed before control. Keep markers flat and maintain space between groups.
