Use the fifth shot to continue a controlled transition instead of expecting one third-shot drop to finish the trip to the kitchen.
Equipment
- Pickleball paddles
- Pickleballs
- Pickleball court
Setup
The returning team begins at the non-volley line. The serving team begins at the baseline and receives a cooperative deep return to start each repetition.
How to run it
1. The serving team hits a third-shot drop and advances only as far as its quality allows.
2. The non-volley-line team volleys a controlled fourth ball toward the transition players.
3. The transition player chooses a reset, block, repeat drop, or controlled volley for the fifth shot.
4. A low fifth shot earns another controlled advance; otherwise hold and defend.
5. Continue live until the serving team reaches the line in balance or loses the rally. Switch teams after six starts.
Coach Dave’s cues
Expect multiple balls in transition. Keep the paddle in front, soften the hand on resets, and communicate “go” or “stay” so partners move together.
Watch for
Assuming a good third shot guarantees the line, taking a large transition swing, advancing while the ball is high, or leaving a partner behind.
